Piblet Assistant: Raspberry Pi Powered Tablet + Magic Mirror + Google Home Assistant

Ever since I put together the Raspberry Pi with a 7” touchscreen I haven’t exactly figured out what to do with it until I put it on top of a Google AIY Voice kit.

What if I made a google home hub? I’ve built an Alexa with a Raspberry Pi and a ridiculously large microphone condenser before. I’ve also put together a few Google Home Assistants (way too many of them if you ask my wife). So I decided to take apart one of them and build it into the Raspberry Pi tablet.

I made a small 3.5mm headphone jack attachment so I can make the speaker that came with the Google AIY Voice kit modular

The audio levels were surprisingly underwhelming when you take the speaker out of the cardboard box. Turns out the flimsy cardboard box that came with the kit actually amplifies the audio a lot. I thought of putting it back in the box but decided to use one of the many tin can cases I have lying around as a speaker case.

Here’s what the monstrosity looks like in action.

I’ve wanted to do a Magic Mirror build for quite a while now but was too cheap to buy the parts. But since I had a 7” screen with nothing to show on, I decided to add that as well. I also added the LED button back to the build by putting it inside a plastic pill bottle. It’s useful for visually seeing if it heard me say “Hey Google” and the occasional need to push a button.
