The train announcement was blaring from the platform and stating the destination of the manhattan bound train. I was on my way down the stairs to catch that train. As I stood on the platform trying to jump in, the doors started to close. Unlike in an elevator situation where I would have reached out to stop the doors, I took a step back and let the doors close. Suddenly a young lady behind me stuck her hand in between the train doors and said to me “You should fight for things like this”. To this I replied, “Not really, there’s always a next train”. She stopped and looked at me, the blood slowly draining from her face. For a split second I felt good imparting my wisdom to a younger generation. She then said “ouch!”. Apparently, she wasn’t touched by my words but instead has her hand stuck in between the train doors. The train operator eventually opened the doors and she was able to get in. I on the other hand walked away thinking of the sign I saw just a few minutes ago “A New York minute is faster than a minute”. I’m thinking of writing something under that sign tomorrow when I pass by it “Which is why we all have to keep fighting for more time”.
