We all have an insurmountable amount of things to be unhappy about. Without any significant effort, I am sure every single one of us can think of at least one reason to be unhappy right now. There was a study done about the correlations of how unhappiness is linked to mind wandering. They posit that when our minds wander about, we feel more unhappy which leads them to conclude that we should live in the present where, based on the experiment’s results make us more happy.
I actually think that the problem is not just us being unhappy when we think outside the present, but rather the inability by most of us to be “happy about the present”. This is but the human condition. But don’t be sad, there is an easy way for you to get around this problem.
It is a lesson that has been passed on by generations, and is almost always never followed. It is usually imposed thru religion or even at times by the state. It is implemented thru prayer or events that give tribute. It is after all nothing more than “appreciation” for what we currently have.
We pray to remind us that we need to be thankful of what he have. We also pray to be thankful that you have more than what most everyone else has. At an event like a Veterans day party, you most likely would be showing appreciation to someone else. I’m hoping those you are showing appreciation to does indeed appreciate it. Now all of the people in these examples can either be happy or unhappy during both these situations. It is entirely in their hands whether they wan’t to be happy with what they have or be unhappy for not getting what they want.
I do not want to be a hypocrite by saying that I am always happy and appreciative of what I have. Sometimes (most of the time) I do feel unhappy when I don’t get what I want. I guess you can’t always be happy, but it is your fault if you are never happy. Learn to appreciate more what you have now and don’t let your mind wander about thinking of what you might have tomorrow. Trust me, you will be happier, “for now”.
